Rick was born in Saskatchewan and grew up in various small towns throughout the province eventually settling to stay in Saskatoon. He enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program in 1996 and graduated with great distinction and with distinguished exhibition in 2000. Upon graduating he spent a few years split between working in Saskatoon and traveling over-seas with significant time spent in the western countries of the Middle East, Paris and London. Upon his return he moved to a cabin north of Saskatoon for six months in order to reinvigorate his art practice, during which time he developed a portfolio for application to Master's of Fine Arts programs. He has graduated from the Master's program at the University of Saskatchewan and presented his thesis exhibition at the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery in February 2008.
